Index der consumptieprijzen in België
De Index der consumptieprijzen, of kortweg de index, is een lijst van de prijzen van goederen en diensten, opgesteld door het Nationaal Instituut voor de Statistiek. De index wordt maandelijks bijgehouden en weerspiegelt de evolutie van de levensduurte. In de index worden de producten en diensten opgenomen die representatief zijn voor het koopgedrag van de Belgische consument. De berekeningswijze gebeurt volgens de wiskundige formule van het indexcijfer.
Er bestaan 2 versies van de index: het algemeen indexcijfer en de gezondheidsindex.
In het geval van de gezondheidsindex werden een aantal producten die de gezondheid schaden, zoals sigaretten, uit de index gehaald. Daardoor stijgt de gezondheidsindex niet als taksen op sigaretten, brandstoffen, etc. stijgen.
Welvaartsvastheid
In België zijn lonen, vergoedingen, vervangingsinkomens, pensioenen, huurprijzen, verzekeringspremies, etc. aan de gezondheidsindex gekoppeld. Zodoende wordt het inkomen van de doorsnee Belg "welvaartsvast".
De aanpassing van lonen aan de index wordt bij de overheid uitgevoerd in het geval een bepaalde grens bereikt wordt. Deze wordt de spilindex genoemd.
Soms worden aanpassingen jaarlijks uitgevoerd. Dit is bijvoorbeeld het geval bij huurprijzen.
