Opportunity Peterborough
From Wikipedia
Opportunity Peterborough is an Urban Regeneration Company in the United Kingdom, established in April 2005, to manage the billion pound transformation of Peterborough in Cambridgeshire and to ensure that the city centre develops in parallel with Peterborough's planned growth. Urban Regeneration Companies are private companies that seek to achieve a radical physical transformation of their areas through masterplanning and co-ordinating financial assistance to developers from both the public and private sector. Opportunity Peterborough is a company limited by guarantee provided by three partners — Peterborough City Council, the East of England Development Agency and national regeneration agency English Partnerships.
The East of England Development Agency, with support from Peterborough City Council and English Partnerships, applied to the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister for permission to form an Urban Regeneration Company for Peterborough. The partners submitted a business case and a business plan, together with letters of support from a range of local businesses and organisations. Keith Hill, Minister for Housing and Planning, approved the establishment of Opportunity Peterborough in February 2005 and announced the approval in his keynote speech at a Local Government Association conference in March 2005. A shadow board guided the company formation prior to the establishment of the full board. It comprised an interim chair, representatives from each of the partners, the chair of the Greater Peterborough Partnership (the local strategic partnership), and an observer from GO-East (the Government Office for the East of England).
Operating in the private sector and headed by an experienced management team, Opportunity Peterborough has access to public and private sector funds. The objectives are to assist, promote, encourage, develop and secure regeneration of the social, physical, and economic environment of Peterborough. The aim is to confirm Peterborough as a premier location for business and industry, increase the prosperity of the city's people, facilitate employment and training opportunities and increase housing choice.
