Het Ossetisch of Osseets (Ирон æвзаг, Iron æwzag) is een taal uit de centrale Kaukasus, die behoort tot de Noordoost-Iraanse talen binnen de Indo-Europese taalfamilie. Daarmee is het Ossetisch verwant aan het Sogdisch en het Yaghnobi en op wat grotere afstand met het Perzisch (Zuidwest-Iraans) en het Koerdisch (Noordwest-Iraans). Het Ossetisch is bijgevolg ook een verre verwante van de meeste talen van Europa, waaronder het Nederlands.
Verspreiding
Het Ossetisch wordt door ongeveer 500.000 Osseten gesproken. Zij leven zowel aan de noordkant van de Grote Kaukasus (in het Russische Noord-Ossetië) als aan de zuidkant (in het de jure Georgische Zuid-Ossetië).
Dialecten
Het Ossetisch is verdeeld in twee dialectgroepen; het Iron (Ossetisch: Ирон) in Noord- en Zuid-Ossetië en het Digor (Ossetisch: Дыгурон). Het Digor is een de archaïsche vorm van het Ossetisch en het Iron is een jongere vorm van het Ossetisch en de literaire taal en schrijftaal van de huidige Osseten. Er is zijn nog enkele subdialecten, waaronder het Tual, Alagir en het Ksan.
Geschiedenis
Het Ossetisch is een overblijfsel van een Scytisch-Sarmatische dialectgroep, dat ooit door Iraanse ruitervolken, zoals de Scythen en Sarmaten, op de Zuid-Russische steppe en in Centraal-Azië, werd gesproken. De Alanen, van wie de oostelijke tak de voorouders van de Osseten waren, spraken het Alaans, wat kan worden beschouwd als een soort proto-Ossetisch.
