Die Pottwale (Physeteridae) sind eine Familie der Zahnwale. Sie umfasst neben dem eigentlichen Pottwal auch die zwei Arten der Zwergpottwale.

Merkmale
Pottwale unterscheiden sich deutlich in der Größe. Während der eigentliche Pottwal 20 Meter Länge und 50 Tonnen Gewicht erreichen kann, werden die Zwergpottwale nur bis zu 3,4 Meter lang und 400 Kilogramm schwer. Gemeinsam ist ihnen der übermäßig große Vorderkopf mit dem Spermaceti-Organ. Zähne sind nur am Unterkiefer vorhanden, die unpaare Nasenöffnung befindet sich auf der linken Schädelseite – bei den Zwergpottwalen am Scheitel und beim eigentlichen Pottwal am Vorderkopf.
Systematik
Traditionell werden die Pottwale zu den Zahnwalen eingeordnet. Einige phylogenetische Analysen sehen sie jedoch als Schwestergruppe der Bartenwale und somit näher mit diesen als mit den übrigen Zahnwalen verwandt. Dies ist aber umstritten. Die Familie der Pottwale wird mit einigen ausgestorbenen Walen aus der Stammlinie der Pottwale (z.B. Livyatan melvillei) in eine Überfamilie Physeteroidea gestellt.
Innerhalb der Pottwale werden zwei Gattungen mit drei Arten unterschieden:
- Gattung Physeter
- Pottwal (Physeter catodon)
- Gattung Zwergpottwale (Kogia)
- Kleiner Pottwal (Kogia simus)
- Zwergpottwal (Kogia breviceps)
Aufgrund großer Unterschiede in den Ausmaßen, dem Körperbau und der Lebensweise werden die Zwergpottwale manchmal in eine eigene Familie (Kogiidae) eingeordnet.
