  History

The village lies within the historic boundaries of Middlesex and from 1930 formed part of the Staines Urban District which was transferred to Surrey in 1965. From 1974 it formed part of the borough of Spelthorne. In 1995 it became, along with Colnbrook in Buckinghamshire, part of the Colnbrook with Poyle parish of the borough of Slough in Berkshire.

  Transport

Local bus services are operated by London United and First Group. Poyle was once served by two stations on the Staines & West Drayton Railway having the two stations Poyle Halt and Poyle Estate Halt. Poyle Halt (for Stanwell Moor) was opened in 1927, with Poyle Estate opening in 1954. Passenger services were withdrawn on March 29, 1965.[citation needed] All traffic was withdrawn in 1981.

  Heathrow Airport

Poyle is the location of a major Federal Express (FedEx) sorting office where parcels and letters are processed before being air dispatched to overseas destinations (via nearby Heathrow airport). Due to its proximity to Heathrow airport Poyle lies under the flight path of many departing/arriving routes. Poyle Residents Association have long campaigned for restrictions on night flights from Heathrow airport. Along with other local village/town residents' groups they have been involved in second stage consultation talks (during 2005) with the DTI about this problem. Poyle is also the British location for the Aerospace Fire Protection Company, named Graviner (which was part of Wilkinson Sword) and is now Kidde-Graviner part of the United Technologies Corporation Group. Poyle is now home to the Hilton London Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 which is scheduled to open on 31st August 2011.

Lettris

Lettris is a curious tetris-clone game where all the bricks have the same square shape but different content. Each square carries a letter. To make squares disappear and save space for other squares you have to assemble English words (left, right, up, down) from the falling squares.

boggle

Boggle gives you 3 minutes to find as many words (3 letters or more) as you can in a grid of 16 letters. You can also try the grid of 16 letters. Letters must be adjacent and longer words score better. See if you can get into the grid Hall of Fame !
