Q (band)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation, search

Q was a small techno band formed in 1982 by Jon St. James and Stacey Swain. Ross Wood was also a group member, and John Van Tongeren was involved as well. The group only had two releases: a 7" single of their song "Playback" on Cocteau Records, and a four-track EP released almost exclusively to college radio stations that has become known among fans as The Q EP. Only 1,000 copies were printed of the EP, and it's considered highly collectible.

Swain and St. James (along with Van Tongeren) formed SSQ shortly after the release of Q's EP, and they went on to release one album, Playback, as well as a couple of singles over the next two years.

The same lineup of musicians, with Swain and St. James still at the core, would eventually achieve commercial success under the name Stacey Q.

edit

The Q band of the microwave part of the electromagnetic spectrum and ranges from 33 to 50 GHz. It sits above, and partly overlaps with, the U.S. IEEE designated Ka band (26.5 to 40 GHz). It sits below the U.S. IEEE designated V band (50–75 GHz) in frequency.

The Q band is used for radio astronomy studies such as the QUIET telescope. It is also used in automotive radar, and radar investigating the properties of the Earth's surface[1]

Other Microwave bands

The microwave spectrum is usually defined as electromagnetic energy ranging from approximately 1 GHz to 100 GHz in frequency, but older usage includes lower frequencies. Most common applications are within the 1 to 40 GHz range. Microwave frequency bands, as defined by the Radio Society of Great Britain (RSGB), are shown in the table below:

L band1 to 2 GHz
S band2 to 4 GHz
C band4 to 8 GHz
X band8 to 12 GHz
Ku band12 to 18 GHz
K band18 to 26.5 GHz
Ka band26.5 to 40 GHz
Q band30 to 50 GHz
U band40 to 60 GHz
V band50 to 75 GHz
E band60 to 90 GHz
W band75 to 110 GHz
F band90 to 140 GHz
D band110 to 170 GHz

Footnote: P band is sometimes incorrectly used for Ku Band. "P" for "previous" was a radar band used in the UK ranging from 250 to 500 MHz and now obsolete per IEEE Std 521, see[1] and [2]. For other definitions see Letter Designations of Microwave Bands

Lettris

Lettris is a curious tetris-clone game where all the bricks have the same square shape but different content. Each square carries a letter. To make squares disappear and save space for other squares you have to assemble English words (left, right, up, down) from the falling squares.

boggle

Boggle gives you 3 minutes to find as many words (3 letters or more) as you can in a grid of 16 letters. You can also try the grid of 16 letters. Letters must be adjacent and longer words score better. See if you can get into the grid Hall of Fame !
