Per rito gallicano si intendono le tradizioni liturgiche in uso nelle diocesi della Francia.

La liturgia della Gallia
La liturgia cattolica in uso in Gallia nel tardo impero romano e fino al IX secolo è molto mal conosciuta perché la sua organizzazione non è sopravvissuta alle riforme di Carlo Magno.
Si attribuisce a san Germano di Parigi (l'attribuzione è contestata dalla critica migliore) una Expositio missae Gallicanae che rappresenta una descrizione della forma tardiva verso la fine del VII secolo.
Nella sua struttura la liturgia gallicana è avvicinabile alla liturgia visigota di cui c'è la continuazione nei secoli nella liturgia mozarabica che conosce una grande preghiera sacerdotale e delle parti mobili. Si è visto nel VII e VIII secolo un'influenza di usi orientali, in particolare di rito siriaco.
Le liturgie neo-gallicane
In seguito, scomparso l'antico rito gallicano si è usato lo stesso termine per indicare i riti delle diocesi francesi. In occasione del concordato del 1802 la Santa Sede diede un riconoscimento implicito a questi riti. Fu Prosper Guéranger a battersi per la restaurazione del rito romano che fu recuperato progressivamente a metà del XIX secolo, salvo aspetti secondari che si fondavano su alcune tradizioni ab immemorabili.
L'ultima diocesi francese ad abbandonare il rito gallicano fu quella di Orléans, che adottò il rito romano nel 1874.[1]
Rito lionese
Solo il rito lionese si è conservato come liturgia particolare fino alla riforma di papa Paolo VI e continua a essere celebrato a Lione in circostanze particolari.
