Le traité de Vienne du 18 novembre 1738 met fin à la Guerre de Succession de Pologne. Il est assorti de nombre de dispositions dynastiques qui modifient la carte politique européenne, et assurent un équilibre entre les deux plus grandes puissances ennemies du continent, le royaume de France et le Saint-Empire.
L'Autriche, vaincue, demande la paix, dont les préliminaires sont signés à Vienne en 1735, trois ans avant le traité final (troisième traité de Vienne). S'ensuit alors une sorte de chassé-croisé sur les trônes européens, favorable à la politique de la France.
Ces articles préliminaires sont suivis d'une convention franco-autrichienne signée à Vienne le 28 août 1736[1] relative aux modalités de la cession de la Lorraine, acceptée par une déclaration de François III de Lorraine du 13 décembre 1736[2]. En retour, Louis XV reconnaît enfin la Pragmatique Sanction de l'empereur Charles VI.
