Ein Walzwerk ist eine Betriebsstätte, in der aus Stahl oder Nichteisenmetallen durch Walzen Produkte wie z. B. Bleche und Bänder, Rohre, Stäbe, oder T-Träger hergestellt werden. Das Walzen schließt sich an das Urformen an. Ausgangsprodukte sind Barren, Brammen, Blöcke oder Knüppel. Die Erzeugnisse sind Halbzeuge für die nachfolgenden Prozesse.

Einteilung nach dem Zustand des Werkstoffs
- Beim Warmwalzen wird das Vormaterial zuerst auf eine Temperatur über der Rekristallisationstemperatur erwärmt (Anmerkung: Die Rekristallisationstemperatur kann auch niedriger als 20 °C sein). Dann wird es zwischen Walzenpaaren hindurchgeführt, die es in die gewünschte Größe und Form bringen.
- Beim Kaltwalzen wird das Werkstück unterhalb der Rekristallisationstemperatur umgeformt.
Einteilung nach dem Produkt
Außer nach dem Werkstoffzustand werden Walzwerke nach dem hergestellten Produkt bezeichnet:
- Langprodukte sind Erzeugnisse, deren Länge sehr viel größer ist als die Dicke und Breite. Walzwerke für Langprodukte können sein:
- Drahtwalzwerke, in dem Produkte hergestellt werden, die in Bunden aufgehaspelt werden.
- Träger- bzw. Formstahl-Walzwerk, deren Erzeugnisse vor dem Versand in Transportlängen geschnitten werden (die z. B. für Schienen durchaus 120m betragen kann).
- Rohrwalzwerke.
- Breitflachprodukte unterscheiden sich von den Langprodukten dadurch, dass die Breite sehr viel größer ist als die Dicke. Sie werden unterteilt in:
- Bandwalzwerke (Prozesse: Warmwalzen oder Kaltwalzen),
- und in Blechwalzwerken .
