REMARQUE
1. Il se met après son substantif ; dans quelques circonstances on peut le placer avant, mais surtout avec des noms féminins : abjecte naissance, abjecte créature.
2. La prononciation de ce mot est incertaine. Plusieurs prononcent ab-jè-kt', et de même au pluriel ; d'autres ne font pas sentir le c, et disent abjè, comme dans sujet ; mais au féminin, ab-jé-kt'. Le fait est que dans le XVIIe siècle Corneille a fait rimer abject avec sujet et projet (voy. les exemples), ne prononçant pas le c. Je crois que c'est en effet la meilleure prononciation, et qu'il faut prononcer abject au masculin singulier ou pluriel comme on prononce sujet et projet, qui d'ailleurs sont composés de même ; et si la langue avait été conséquente, le c aurait disparu d'abject comme il a disparu des mots précités. On pourrait ainsi formuler la règle : quand la voix pourra s'arrêter sur abject, on ne fera entendre ni le c ni le t : un homme abject, prononcez abjè ; mais quand la voix ne s'y arrêtera pas, on fera sentir le c et le t : et dans ce vers de Boileau, Au contraire cet autre abject en son langage, on dira : ab-jè-kt en son langage. L'intervention de l'Académie pour décider ce cas de prononciation serait nécessaire.
