Lettris

Lettris is a curious tetris-clone game where all the bricks have the same square shape but different content. Each square carries a letter. To make squares disappear and save space for other squares you have to assemble English words (left, right, up, down) from the falling squares.

Boggle gives you 3 minutes to find as many words (3 letters or more) as you can in a grid of 16 letters. You can also try the grid of 16 letters. Letters must be adjacent and longer words score better. See if you can get into the grid Hall of Fame !

CASEMATE (s. f.)

1. Terme de fortification. Souterrain voûté à l'épreuve de la bombe.

Autrefois, plate-forme à loger du canon, qui était pratiquée dans la partie du flanc proche de la courtine, et qui faisait une retraite ou un enfoncement vers la capitale du bastion.

Par extension et dans le langage des soldats, cachot. On le laissera pourrir dans un trou de casemate. Dans le même langage il signifie aussi quelquefois latrines.

2. Terme de chasse. Trou dans lequel les blaireaux et les renards font tête aux bassets.

HISTORIQUE

XVIe s.— Les autres vuidoyent chasmates, rembarroyent faulses brayes, erigeoyent cavaliers (RAB. Pant. III, Prologue.)— Encores que les bastions ne soyent pas defendus d'artillerie d'aucunes casemates basses, ils ne laissent de l'estre très bien de l'harquebuserie des courtines (LANOUE 337)— Assisté de dix compagnons, il dessendit dans le fossé de la ville, se precipite dans une casemete, que ne pouvant garder, il mit en feu (D'AUB. Hist. III, 39 (alias : casemate).)— Fortiffié à la vieille mode, sans flancs, parapects, boulevarts, ravelins, cases-mattes, plates-formes, ny aucun rempart (CARLOIX V, 14)— Casemattes (CARLOIX VI, 40)— Casmates (CARLOIX VII, 10)— Nous voyons souvent une milliasse de pauvres hommes fricassés sous une mine ou cazemate (PARÉ IX, Préf.)— Nous gagnasmes aussi deux de leurs casemattes que nous leur avons rendues inutiles (SULLY Mém. t. ÉTYMOLOGIE

Espagn. casamata ; de l'ital. casamatta. Ce mot paraît se décomposer en casa, maison, et matta, folle, dénomination bizarre et qui serait venue on ne sait de quel caprice. Aussi des étymologistes, et Diez entre autres, le rattachent au grec, fossé; mais on ne voit pas comment ce mot serait entré dans l'italien et sous cette forme.

CASEMATE. - ÉTYM. Ajoutez : M. Devic, Dict. étym., demande si ce mot ne serait pas une altération de l'arabe qasaba (voy. CASAUBA), l'm et et le b étant deux lettres sujettes à se substituer l'une à l'autre.

La casemate désigne un local d'une fortification ou d'un fort qui est à l'épreuve des tirs ennemis. On peut classer les casemates en deux catégories : les casemates passives destinées à abriter la troupe ou du matériel, comme par exemple, dans un casernement de fort Séré de Rivières ou actives protégeant ainsi des organes de tir (casemate d'artillerie ou d'infanterie).

Par extension, dans la Ligne Maginot et les fortifications du XXe siècle, une casemate peut être un blockhaus isolé mais de taille assez importante
