ÉTYMOLOGIE
On trouve un dérivé de ce mot dans l'ancienne langue : ariere turne al bruiseïs Et au très fier comploteïs, BENOÎT, II, 10491. Ce mot est formé de com, et d'un radical plot qui est dans l'anglais où il signifie : morceau de terre, champ, plan, menée, intrigue.— Au sens de morceau de terre, se rapporte peut-être complai, terre détrempée : Il ot pleü, si fist molt lai complai (Raoul de Cambrai, 109) Maintenant d'où vient l'anglais plot ? Y a-t-il deux mots différents, l'un signifiant morceau de terre, l'autre complot, ou bien un seul mot avec une transition de sens qui nous échappe ? Diez propose avec doute complicitum, qui peut, il est vrai, à la rigueur, donner complot ; mais cette étymologie paraît difficilement conciliable avec le radical plot qui est en anglais, et qui reste, avec le mot français, dans l'obscurité.
