Fatal n'a point de pluriel. L'oreille repousse aujourd'hui fataux, qui se disait au XVIe siècle, et la grammaire repousse fatals.— Boursault s'est moqué de cette contradiction : Ces bras te deviendront ou fatals ou fataux (BOURSAULT Merc. galant. IV, 7)— Et Voltaire à sa suite : S'ils n'insèrent pas dans l'ouvrage les cartons nécessaires, je demanderai net la saisie des exemplaires fataux ou fatals (VOLT. SYNONYME
FATAL, FUNESTE. Étymologiquement, fatal exprime ce qui est réglé par l'irrévocable destin ; funeste, ce qui est funéraire, funèbre. Ce n'est donc que secondairement que fatal a le sens de funeste, et alors il s'en distingue parce qu'il porte toujours en soi l'idée de la fatalité.
