XIVe s.— Trop sunt ambeduï soi tenant bras et bras ; Plus fort ne fu, de voir [de vrai], de ces deux fierabras (Girart de Ross. v. 4649)
ÉTYMOLOGIE
Nom d'un géant qui combattit contre Olivier. L'étymologie est controversée. Du Cange, au mot ferrebrachia, y voit brachia ferrea, des bras de fer, suivant en cela Guill. d'Apulée qui explique le surnom de Guillaume frère de Robert Guiscard par ferrea dictus habere brachia, et retrouvant brachii ferrei comme surnom de Guillaume IV, comte de Poitiers. Au contraire les éditeurs du poëme de Fierabras y voient fera brachia, des bras vaillants, citant une traduction latine du moyen âge qui porte fera-brachia, et les formes fierebrache de Ph. Mouskes et fierbras du XVIe siècle. Dans ces deux cas, le premier a de fierabras est difficile à expliquer.
