WordGame

The English word games are:

Lettris

Lettris is a curious tetris-clone game where all the bricks have the same square shape but different content. Each square carries a letter. To make squares disappear and save space for other squares you have to assemble English words (left, right, up, down) from the falling squares.

boggle

Boggle gives you 3 minutes to find as many words (3 letters or more) as you can in a grid of 16 letters. You can also try the grid of 16 letters. Letters must be adjacent and longer words score better. See if you can get into the grid Hall of Fame !

Nom donné dans les dunes de la Gironde à des amas d'eau qui se forment lors des pluies au fond des vallées sèches séparatives des dunes et qui s'évaporent par les chaleurs.

SUPPLÉMENT AU DICTIONNAIRE

LETTE. Ajoutez :— Les vallées [des dunes dans les landes de Gascogne] appelées lettes sont variables de largeur ; leur fond est plat et généralement marécageux quand les dunes sont nues (G. BAGNERIS Man. de sylvic. p. 288, Nancy, 1873)

On trouve aussi écrit leyte.— L'État ne justifie pas qu'avant 1789, la généralité des habitants de cette commune [Le Porge, arrondissement de Bordeaux] ait été simple usagère des dunes et leytes litigieuses.... que, vu l'extrême mobilité de ces dunes et leurs fréquents déplacements qui laissaient à découvert les espaces qu'elles avaient momentanément occupés, la possession des leytes a nécessairement compris la possession des dunes, tant que celles-ci n'ont pas été fixées par des plantations de pins commencées seulement au cours de l'année 1823 (Arrêt de la Cour d'appel de Bordeaux, 1re chambre, 6 mai 1872, dans Gaz. des Trib. des 21 et 22 nov. 1872, p. 1033, 1re col.)

Il se dit aussi de la vallée même où se rassemblent les eaux.— Les collines de dunes boisées au pied desquelles s'étend Arcachon, les lettes ou vallées qu'elles renferment, l'antique faîte de la Teste, parsemé de vieux chênes, ont déjà quelque attrait (CH. BROILLARD Rev. des Deux-Mondes, 1er avril 1877, p. 663)

Origine inconnue. C'est le même mot que lède 1 (voy. ce mot au Dictionnaire et au Supplément).

Dans les Landes de Gascogne, on désigne par lette une dépression inscrite entre deux dunes de la zone littorale.

Etymologie

Lette vient du Gascon leta, lui-même issu du latin lata : large

Historique

On élevait jadis du bétail et notamment des vaches marines dans les pâturages présents dans ces dépressions, généralement marécageuses. A cet égard, la lette de la côte à Mimizan abrite les deux étangs de Malloueyre. Pistes et chemins muletiers y sont tracés.
