XVIe s.— Un an après vint un gros maraut qui contrefaisoit le ladre (PARÉ XXII, 8)— Encores aujourd'hui appellons nous ceux à qui nous voulons mal et pensons injurier, marauts, coquins, belistres.... (BOUCHET Serées, livre III, p. 159, dans LACURNE)— Canius Julius.... ayant esté condamné à mort par ce maraud de Caligula (MONT. II, 50)
ÉTYMOLOGIE
Origine inconnue. Le portugais a maroto et les étymologistes portugais le tirent de l'arabe marudo, insolent ; mais maroto paraît n'être pas indigène et venir du français. On l'a tiré d'un comte de Mérode, commandant pendant la guerre de Trente ans un régiment de soldats pillards ; mais maraud (marault) est dans Villon, 200 ans avant le comte de Mérode. Diez conjecture l'adjectif esp. malroto, du lat. male, mal, et ruptus, ruiné ; Mahn, le lat. morator, celui qui traîne, parce que les traînards sont souvent des maraudeurs. Tout cela n'est qu'hypothèse, mais, en attendant d'autres documents, il faut noter que dans le dialecte de Corse marodi, et dans celui de Côme marò signifient maladif, et que primitivement en français maraud signifie pauvre gueux.
SUPPLÉMENT AU DICTIONNAIRE
MARAUD. - ÉTYM. Aux diverses conjectures qui sont rapportées dans l'article, M. Bugge, Romania, n° 10, p. 155, ajoute la sienne. Suivant lui, marault (c'est la forme la plus ancienne) demande une forme antérieure maraldus (comme chaud de caldus), laquelle provient, par dissimilation, de malaldus ; mal se trouve plusieurs fois en français sous la forme mar. M. Bugge remarque que l'étymologie qu'il donne convient très bien à la notion de maraud ; l'ancien marault signifiait pauvre gueux ; le ladin marodi et dans le dialecte de Côme maro signifient maladif, et les langues romanes emploient pour exprimer maladif plusieurs mots qui se rattachent au lat. malus. à cette discussion de M. Bugge on peut ajouter que, dans le langage de Menton, maraut (pour malaut) signifie malade (Romania, juillet-oct. 1875, p. 493). C'est un trait de plus à ajouter à ceux qui indiquent une parenté entre maraud et malade et que j'ai notés dans le Dictionnaire.
