Lettris

Lettris is a curious tetris-clone game where all the bricks have the same square shape but different content. Each square carries a letter. To make squares disappear and save space for other squares you have to assemble English words (left, right, up, down) from the falling squares.

CROQUER

, n° 5, et l'explication de la locution. Contrairement à l'explication donnée par Furetière, M. Boucherie pense que croquer le marmot provient de la fable où la mère promet de donner au loup l'enfant qui crie, et que c'est attendre le moment où l'on permettra au loup de croquer le marmot. Mais cette explication pèche en ce que c'est introduire dans la locution attendre qui n'y est pas, et qu'il faut trouver une interprétation qui de croquer le marmot mène directement à attendre.

4. Variété de raisin.

REMARQUE

L'Académie définit le marmot, espèce de singe qui a une barbe et une longue queue, mais aucun singe n'est ainsi appelé dans les ouvrages d'histoire naturelle. Cette définition est donc mauvaise ; et la seule qu'on puisse donner est que marmot était un ancien nom du singe.

HISTORIQUE

XVe s.— Elle dit qu'il est debonnaire, Bel homme, plaisant et mignot ; Et c'est un putier ordinaire, Qui est aussi laid qu'ung marmot (COQUILLART Droits nouveaux.)

XVIe s.— En l'isle de Zocotere, on voit une beste qui s'appelle huspalin, grosse comme un marmot ethiopien, fort monstrueuse (PARÉ Monstres app. 3)— Or des bestes que j'ay sus dites, Sagon, tu n'es des plus petites ; Combien que Sagon soit un mot Et le nom d'un petit marmot (MAROT le Valet contre Sagon.)

ÉTYMOLOGIE

Wallon, marmot, roquet ; ital. marmocchio. Origine inconnue. Henri Estienne, dans sa Conformité du langage français avec le grec, l'a tiré du terme grec qui signifie épouvantail ; mais on ne voit pas comment ce mot grec serait entré en français. Marmot se rattache-t-il à marmotte ou à marmouset ? Scheler demande si marmot ne serait pas un dérivé de l'ancien français merme, qui signifie très petit ; cela n'est pas impossible, bien que le sens primitif soit singe et non enfant. Marmaille paraît tenir à marmot. M. Boucherie croit que marmot vient de l'ancien français m'arme [mon âme] ; mais cela, qui peut-être s'appliquerait à marmot, enfant, ne s'applique aucunement à marmot, singe, qui est le sens ancien.
