Lettris

Lettris is a curious tetris-clone game where all the bricks have the same square shape but different content. Each square carries a letter. To make squares disappear and save space for other squares you have to assemble English words (left, right, up, down) from the falling squares.

Boggle gives you 3 minutes to find as many words (3 letters or more) as you can in a grid of 16 letters. You can also try the grid of 16 letters. Letters must be adjacent and longer words score better. See if you can get into the grid Hall of Fame !

MARRON (s. m.)

1. Espèce de grosse châtaigne bonne à manger ; le marron est une châtaigne, c'est-à-dire une graine de châtaignier, devenue unique dans le fruit par avortement des deux autres, et ayant pris accroissement en proportion de la place qu'elle occupait toute seule dans l'involucre fructifère ; les châtaigniers où cette variété prédomine et se perpétue portent le nom de marronniers.

XVIe s.— Les sardonnes [châtaignes de Sardaigne] sont celles qu'on appelle à Lion marrons, cogneues par toute la France pour le traffique de tel fruit (O. DE SERRES 691)

ÉTYMOLOGIE

Ital. marrone, marron, dont la provenance ultérieure est inconnue.

MARRON, ONNE (adj.)

1. Se dit du nègre qui s'est enfui dans les bois pour y vivre en liberté. Nègre marron, négresse marronne.

2. Animal domestique qui est devenu sauvage. Cochon marron.

3. Fig. Il se dit de celui qui exerce, sans titre, sans commission, l'état d'agent de change, de courtier. Courtier marron, ou substantivement : c'est un marron.

4. Se dit d'un imprimeur qui exerce son état clandestinement et sans brevet.

5. S. m. Un marron, un ouvrage imprimé clandestinement.

Caractère découpé dans des feuilles de cuivre : on s'en sert avec un pinceau et de la couleur, pour tracer des lettres et des mots entiers sur des ballots, de petites affiches, etc.

REMARQUE

Au mot marron l'Académie écrit : Négresse marronne. Au mot négresse, on lit : Une négresse maronne, avec une seule r, PAUTEX.

ÉTYMOLOGIE

D'après Scheler, le noir marron se disait anciennement simarron, qui vient de l'espagnol cimarron, sauvage. Il y a, dans le bas-latin, marrones, nom de gens qui servaient de guide dans les Alpes, et dans le wallon, maroner, fureter, mots qui n'ont rien à faire ici et dont l'origine est d'ailleurs inconnue.
