ÉTYMOLOGIE
Provenç. espagn. et portug. minar ; ital. minare. On a indiqué le celtique : gaél. mein, meiun, meun, mine ; kymri, mwn ; irl. minn. Diez pense qu'il n'y a pas lieu de s'écarter ici du latin ; miner est minare, qui a donné mener, et qui a pris ici un sens spécial : mener un travail, une fouille. À la vérité il y a une difficulté dans la voyelle, et on devrait dire mener, non miner ; mais on trouve en effet dans le provençal mena, mine, à côté de mina, et meniera pour minière ; et les deux formations mener et miner ont pu coexister. Au contraire, Rossignol pense que le mot primitif est minière, du latin miniaria, mine de minium, puis généralisé pour signifier toute espèce de mine. Il est en effet très tentant de dériver minière de miniaria ; d'autant plus que minium se disait mine dans l'ancienne langue (voy. MINIUM). Cela paraît plus probable que minare. Mine [minium] se sera généralisé en toute espèce de métal ; d'où miner.
