Lettris

Lettris is a curious tetris-clone game where all the bricks have the same square shape but different content. Each square carries a letter. To make squares disappear and save space for other squares you have to assemble English words (left, right, up, down) from the falling squares.

Terme familier. Braverie, somptuosité, manières par lesquelles on cherche à attirer l'attention sur soi.

HISTORIQUE

XVIe s.— Nous appelons parade et bravade, eux [les courtisans] diroyent piaffe, ce que nous nommions magnificence (H. EST. Précell. du lang. fr. p. 375, éd. FEUGÉRE.)— Il donna de fort bonne grace dans le bois, ayant à sa teste cent rondaches et plus, qui pour piafes avaient les bras nuds jusques au coude (D'AUB. Hist. I, 22)— .... que, quant à lui, il s'estoit resolu d'attendre ce prince avec toutes ses piaphes (CARL. V, 17)— ... Sans oublier la bonne mine, aultrement la piaffe soldatesque (ID. IX, 28)

ÉTYMOLOGIE

Origine inconnue. Pasquier, Recherches, VIII, 3, parle de ce mot comme nouvellement introduit de son temps. On est tenté d'y voir une dérivation irrégulière du mot pied ; mais la nouveauté du mot, au XVIe siècle, attestée par les contemporains, rend cette dérivation fort problématique.

PIAFFER (v. n.)

1. Faire piaffe.

• Tessé piaffait et se pavanait de son chapeau (SAINT-SIMON 60, 8)

• Le pigeon mâle se contente de tourner en rond en piaffant et se donnant des grâces autour de sa femelle (BUFF. Ois. t. IV, p. 388)

2. En parlant du cheval, frapper des pieds la terre. Cheval qui piaffe d'impatience.

Terme de manége. Se dit d'un cheval qui, en marchant, lève les jambes de devant fort haut et les replace précipitamment presque au même endroit. Piaffer n'est pas trépigner.

S. m. Le piaffer, air bas de manége, dans lequel le cheval lève vite et successivement, et détache de terre les bipèdes diagonaux, sans avancer ni reculer.

Il se conjugue avec l'auxiliaire avoir.

HISTORIQUE

XVIe s.— Paroles piafées, qui ressemblent plustost à un jargon de gueux.... (RONS. 584)— Les depenses superflues et vaines sont odieuses aux subjects, qui murmurent qu'on en depouille mille pour en vestir un, que l'on piaffe de leur substance (CHARRON Sagesse, p. 417, dans LACURNE)
