XIVe s.— Item à l'hopital de Saint Esprit de Besançon pour la pedance des pauvres, deix livres (DU CANGE pictantia.)
XVIe s.— Il luy fut donné le revenu de trois villes pour son pain, son vin et sa pitance (AMYOT Thém. 53)
ÉTYMOLOGIE
Bourguig. Berry et genev. pidance ; provenç. piatansa, piedansa, pidanza, pitansa, pitié, miséricorde ; espagn. pitanza ; ital. pietanza ; lombard, pitansa ; bas-lat. pictancia. La forme pietanza a fait supposer que le mot venait du latin pietas, et signifiait oeuvre charitable ; piteux prouvant que le radical piet peut devenir pit. D'autres ont indiqué pittacium, billet, pitance signifiant dans cette hypothèse la remise d'aliments en échange d'un billet. Diez y a vu le radical pit qui signifie petit ; de sorte que pitance serait la petite portion. Mais la présence du bas latin pictantia paraît donner raison à du Cange, qui le tire de picta, pite, sorte de petite monnaie ; une pitance de moine, sens primitif du mot, étant estimée une pite. D'un autre côté, il faut admettre que pietas a agi pour modifier au sens de charité la forme du mot. Pitance paraît signifier la viande ou en général le mets par opposition au pain, au potage, au vin.
