ÉTYMOLOGIE
Picard, reguin, rouain ; wallon, rigain ; de re..., et gain. Dans l'ancienne langue, gaagner veut dire cultiver la terre, paître ; gaain, la culture, le pâturage. Gaain a en effet le sens de regain (gaïn, Ren. II, 133). Plusieurs formes parallèles à gaain se trouvent dans les patois et ailleurs avec le même sens : wallon, wayen ; lorrain, veyen ; norm. vouin (vuin se trouve aussi dans l'ancien français) ; ital. guaime. Tous ces mots dérivent de l'ancien haut-allemand, weidanjan, paître ; weida, pâture. Le Berry, qui dit reguiner, pousser un regain, a aussi regouive, s. f. et le verbe regouiver ; ces mots, comme on voit, ne sont pas des barbarismes et tiennent aux anciennes formes.
