The English word games are:

Lettris

Lettris is a curious tetris-clone game where all the bricks have the same square shape but different content. Each square carries a letter. To make squares disappear and save space for other squares you have to assemble English words (left, right, up, down) from the falling squares.

Boggle gives you 3 minutes to find as many words (3 letters or more) as you can in a grid of 16 letters. You can also try the grid of 16 letters. Letters must be adjacent and longer words score better. See if you can get into the grid Hall of Fame !

Nom donné, dans le Levant et en Algérie, à ce qu'on nomme aussi langue franque, c'est-à-dire à un jargon mêlé d'italien, d'espagnol et à l'usage des Francs.

• Quand on achetait quelque chose dans une boutique, le marchand ne voulait parler ni français ni sabir : Tu sais l'arabe, disait-il, puisque tu es juif (Journ. offic. 25 avril 1875, p. 2982, 1re col.)

• L'entretien devenait difficile ; mais, voyant que je ne le comprenais pas, il me baragouina dans un français sabir et avec un accent que je renonce à te décrire : Povera eccellenza Barbassou-Pacha !... finito... morto (MARIO UCHARD Revue des Deux-Mondes, 1er août 1876, p. 516)

ÉTYMOLOGIE

Sabir est le verbe savoir ; et, comme à beaucoup de questions les Lévantins et Algériens répondaient mi no sabir (je ne sais pas), on en a fait la langue sabir. Le mot sabir, savoir, est déjà dans Molière : Se ti sabir, Ti respondir ; Se non sabir, Tazir, tazir, Bourg. gentilh. IV, 10.

Un sabir (altération du mot espagnol saber, « savoir »), est une langue de relation utilisée entre des locuteurs parlant des langues maternelles différentes mais placés devant la nécessité de communiquer, d'où l'emploi spécialisé de cette langue dans un domaine donné. On parle également de langue véhiculaire. Le type de sabir le plus connu est la lingua franca, parlée autrefois dans les ports de Méditerranée.

Les sabirs ont un lexique sommaire, limité aux besoins immédiats des locuteurs, et une syntaxe simplifiée par rapport aux langues d'emprunt. Les sabirs ne sont jamais des langues maternelles puisqu'ils naissent de la nécessité de communiquer. On emploie le terme de pidgin plutôt pour les sabirs d'origine anglaise même si cette appellation est restrictive (le pidgin-english du Cameroun, le bêche-de-mer du Pacifique). Pour les sociolinguistes, un pidgin désigne une langue résultant de l'imitation de la langue dominante de la part d'un groupe linguistique dominé (par la colonisation par exemple) et se distingue du sabir par le fait que celui-ci est d'un emploi plus spécialisé.

Dans un registre comique, Molière fait allusion au sabir, dans le Bourgeois Gentilhomme (1670).
